The 20 Highest Paid Players In Chicago

money

On Wednesday it was announced that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane had signed contract extensions with the Blackhawks that would see both making $10.5 million a year starting in the 2015-16 season.

It also means they’ll be the highest paid players in NHL history, but how do their salaries compare to other athletes in Chicago? Well, not all that well, actually.

The Mailbag: Crying For Robin Ventura’s Head

ventura

Welcome to The Chicago Homer’s Mailbag. It runs once a week unless it doesn’t, and in it I answer questions from readers via Twitter or email. The questions can be about any damn thing you please, and there likely isn’t a question I won’t answer. There may be questions I can’t answer, but I’ll try.

If you’d like to submit a question for the next edition of the mailbag it’s pretty simple. Either ask the question on Twitter using the #AskTCH hashtag — as long as you use the hashtag I will see it — or send an email to TCHMailbag@gmail.com.

And now that you know how to do it, let’s get to the this week’s questions.

How Will The Blackhawks Look Next Season?

blackhawkslogo

Tonight the Stanley Cup Final begins and the Blackhawks aren’t in it. That means the offseason has officially begun for Stan Bowman, and there will be changes made to the roster before next season kicks off. What those changes will be, we don’t really know just yet.

But I’m going to try to figure them out anyway.

Brent Seabrook Upset Over Missing Cookies

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings

VANCOUVER, B.C. — After ending a four-game losing streak on Wednesday night the mood in the visitor’s locker room at Rogers Arena was one of relief and celebration, though there was one Chicago Blackhawk who was in no mood to party.

“Somebody stole my fucking cookies,” said Brent Seabrook, several times while roaming the locker room. “Who the fuck stole my cookies?”

Bryan Bickell: The Convenient Scapegoat

Bryan Bickell

Bryan Bickell may be Joel Quenneville’s current scapegoat, but he’s far from the only problem with the Blackhawks right now. Bickell’s biggest mistake seems to be accepting the $16 million contract the Blackhawks offered him in the offseason.

Bickell was benched on Sunday night against Winnipeg, as Quenneville looked to shake things up on a team that’s been coasting a bit too frequently these days, and it paid immediate dividends. The Blackhawks managed to score one whole goal on 35 shots while blowing their 1-0 lead in the third period to lose 3-1!

Problem solved!

The Morning Constitutional: Every Blackhawk Is An Olympian

Via @NHLBlackhawks

Via @NHLBlackhawks

While Patrick Kane will be the only Blackhawk to play for the United States in the Olympics next month, he’s far from the only Olympian on the team. That’s a photo of all of our Olympians above, and I suppose it’s a good thing to have so many great players on your team.

Of course, there’s a flip side to that. While many NHL players will spend the Olympic break actually taking a break, just about every important player on the Blackhawks roster will be playing hockey. And when you’re playing hockey there is the inherent risk of injury of both the lower and upper body varieties. I won’t pretend that this doesn’t worry me because the Blackhawks are one injury away from this season going in a very different direction.

Just ask the Bulls how that works.

So while I can’t wait for the Olympics to get started — the Winter Olympics are far and away my favorite variety of Olympics — I can’t wait for them to be over, with everybody all in one piece.
